SkillsUSA
AGC Las Vegas will again sponsor the TeamWorks Competition portion of Skills USA, April 28-30 at Cashman Center.
TeamWorks challenges four-person teams of high school students to prepare, present and construct a small structure, including framing, rough-in electrical and plumbing and masonry construction. In addition, competitors will complete a written test of general construction and safety knowledge, present their plan for the building construction, including a mission statement, objectives, team members’ roles, communications, ethics and professionalism.
Teams will receive a blueprint of the structure to be constructed and will have nine hours to complete as much of the building as possible. Judging will take place immediately following the competition, and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony. The winning team from the state competition will advance to the national competition in Kansas City, Mo.
To make the event a success, AGC is seeking monetary and material donations for the projects. Four to six teams are expected to complete. AGC will provide lunch for competitors and judges. AGC’s Manpower, Education and Training Committee and the association’s UNLV student chapter will assist in making materials lists.
Carpenter Sellers Architects supplied the blueprints for the contest which returns to Las Vegas after three years in Reno. AGC is responsible for determining which technical building skills will be tested, securing the building materials, recruiting judges and developing the written test.
The SkillsUSA championships are a showcase for career and technical education in the state. The competition recognizes students who excel in their occupational training programs and promote leadership development skills. In addition to the TeamWork contest, other construction-related skill competitions are part of Skills USA, including architectural drafting, cabinetmaking, carpentry, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, masonry, plumbing, residential wiring, sheet metal, drafting and welding. Other vocational competitions include advertising design, automotive service, culinary arts, Internet technology and more.
