Building a Safer Nevada Program

For those of you who are not familiar with the Building a Safer Nevada program it was developed in 2009 in partnership with AGC Reno. The program was created because of the criticism the construction industry was receiving due to the deaths that occurred on the Las Vegas strip and to create some positive public relations for our industry.

The program was designed as a prepaid safety services package with four different tiers of services and prices which members could choose from and at the end of the year the company with the best safety record was presented with the “Building a Safer Nevada” award at the first quarterly luncheon and had an article written about their company in the Construction Connection.

We did not have the participation that we had hope for, therefore, we had originally planned to drop the program this year, however, we have been approached by a few companies that have expressed interest in continuing the program if it could be restructured.

Creating a new prepaid safety services package we have taken into account the economy which has severally limited the number of construction jobs, therefore, the large prepaid safety service packages we offered in 2009 would not be applicable now. We do see a need since many companies have drastically cut their personnel creating a need for the AGC to provide guidance for safety on the jobsite.

We have created a new flat rate prepaid safety services package that offers onsite safety inspections, choice of extra services of which each company can pick four. Prepaying for this program allows you to budget for your safety services in advance, gives you additional eyes on your jobsite's if you have had to cut your safety staff, and makes your company eligible for the remainder of 2010 to win the “Building a Safer Nevada” contractor award which will be presented at the first quarterly luncheon of 2011.
